Tobogganing like the pros - and without any snow at all - in Ernstthal am Rennsteig.
Sledging down a slope in winter is no longer unusual. It gets more exciting when you cool off on a speedy toboggan ride on warm summer days. On a track that winds down a wooded slope and crosses several bridges along the way, the ride can be an unforgettable experience.
This need not remain an unfulfilled dream. All you have to do is come to Ernstthal am Rennsteig, a small town on the Rennsteig in the middle of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. On the Pappenheimer Berg, there is a summer toboggan run that presents pure pleasure to its passengers. Even when climbing to the start, no one breaks a sweat, because the drag lift, which has been converted for summer operation, pulls sleds and crew 500 metres up the mountain. On this occasion, the future bobsleigh pilot can check out the track and get in the mood for what awaits him on the descent.
Once at the top – take a deep breath – then the bobsleigh really gets going. The 800-metre-long track covers a vertical drop of 113.59 metres. But there’s no need to worry about being catapulted off the track if you go too fast. Before things could get dangerous, small signs along the track warn the bobsleigh pilots. Pulling the brake lever, located between the pilot’s knees, prevents the sled from going too fast. Anyone who still feels a bit queasy or would prefer to enjoy the fun as a pair can simply hop onto a two-seater. Everyone else whizzes down into the valley in a single-seater.
The summer toboggan run opened as early as the summer of 1994. The season begins in April and ends, depending on the weather, around October. Should the weather be so bad that the summer toboggan run has to be closed, our guests in Ernstthal am Rennsteig/Lauscha need not worry about getting bored. Visitors can experience local craftsmanship by visiting the glassblowing demonstration workshops. The approximately 50-kilometre-long, well-signposted network of hiking trails around Ernstthal guarantees plenty of opportunities for exercise in the fresh air. The large car park at the valley station of the summer toboggan run can also serve as a starting point for these walks.
Here, too, another attraction awaits our youngest visitors. A motorcade invites them to take a ride in petrol-powered vehicles suitable for children. The snack bar located in the car park offers a wide range of hearty meals and refreshing drinks.
If you’d like to whizz down the Pappenheimer Berg on one of our little black toboggans, or if any of our other activities take your fancy, Ernstthal am Rennsteig is definitely the place for you.
