In the remarkable “glass showcase” amidst the impressive natural landscape of the Schladminger Tauern, visitors take a journey back in time to bygone days when the extraction of raw materials was commonplace in the area around Schladming-Rohrmoos.
Modernity and tradition meet here in the form of simple architecture and old weathered building fabric, contemporary art illustrates past function, the present is confronted with history.
The Hopfriesen Nickel Museum is a stage on the circular mining trail, which also includes the restaurants in Rohrmoos-Obertal and the nearby Bromriesenstollen. The themes of “mining experience” and “water experiences” were already established when the smelting furnace and the Bromriesen tunnel were adapted and have been consistently pursued as additional tourist attractions to this day.
The former nickel smelting furnace has been converted into a museum that is unique in Central Europe. A modern museum building in the form of a prism made of glass and steel has been inserted into the ruins. An impressive combination of original building materials and contemporary architecture has been achieved. With the choice of these building materials, two elements that played a key role in the creation and processing of the raw material nickel were also taken up.
