Since the 19th century, Reichenau has been the summer retreat of Viennese society, a noble country estate for the Viennese Ringstrasse elite. Easily accessible by train, the town was a magnet for the nobility and bourgeoisie, as well as painters, writers, actors, and musicians, thanks to its scenic beauty and appeal as a place to stay and relax, and later also as the summer residence of the emperor and his family.

Summer retreat & inspiration

Reichenau was already a place of summer retreat and inspiration in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Artists and intellectuals such as Arthur Schnitzler, Alma Mahler, Franz Werfel, Oskar Kokoschka, Heimito von Doderer, Peter Altenberg, and Robert Musil spent their summers here. They found seclusion and lively exchange at the same time—they were inspired by nature, the mountains, and social life, went hiking together, and developed new ideas in the process.

Theater tradition

The Kurtheater was opened in 1926. Since 1988, it has been the central venue for the Reichenau Festival, which attracts thousands of visitors every summer. With its performances – often inspired by the landscape, history, and people of the region – it has become a cultural fixture far beyond Lower Austria.

Culture today
In addition to the festival, Reichenau also offers a diverse cultural program today:

  • Wartholz Castle Culture
  • Reichenau Cultural Summer
  • Tonsalon im Herrnhof
  • Cultural events at Reichenau Castle
  • and much more
