Burguete. Back to Baztan

In the extreme west of the Pyrenees the mountains are less imposing, but very interesting for the practice of cyclotourism. In this route we enter the valley of Baztan from Lower Navarre, in France, which allows us to access this region by very quiet roads.

At the beginning we face a simple pass, Ibañeta, which starts in the historic town of Roncesvalles, entrance of the Camino de Santiago in Navarra. A long descent leads us to Valcarlos. After a brief incursion into the neighboring country, we return to the Baztan valley through the Izpegi pass, of great beauty and not too demanding.

The main roads in this area have a high volume of traffic so we choose to access the Artesiaga pass, the hardest of the day, linking secondary roads and crossing beautiful villages such as Arizkun, Elizondo and Irurita. Once crowned, we face the descent and in Zubiri we take the road back to Burguete, with the last two mountain difficulties, Erro and Mezkiritz, which are not a problem because of its short distance and its simple ramps.
