The Lechweg – 125 km from the source to the waterfall
Hiking along the Lechweg
A moderate long-distance hike through an Alpine region that is also one of the last wild river landscapes in Europe: the Lechweg offers a unique nature experience, people shaped by the landscape, and truly legendary stories.
Over a distance of around 125 km, hikers follow the Lech from its source near Lake Formarin in Lech am Arlberg (Vorarlberg, Austria) all the way to the Lechfall waterfall in Füssen in the Allgäu region. In doing so, the trail connects five regions and two countries, along with their traditions and stories.
Certified as a Leading Quality Trail, this long-distance hiking route passes one of the largest ibex colonies in Europe, a waterfall that mysteriously dries up each year and re-emerges, a spectacular pedestrian suspension bridge, and even the Bavarian royal castles.
The magically turquoise river shapes the flora and fauna. Numerous breeding bird species and wild-growing orchids create one of the most biodiverse habitats in Central Europe.
