Description

The open-air museum of the defensive system of the XV Bersaglieri Dolina extends behind the Redipuglia War Memorial, in the area of Mt. Sei Busi. The route mainly winds through a series of dolines, sinkholes in the Karst terrain that were used by soldiers as military positions. The name of the main dolina derives from the presence of an insignia of the 15th Bersaglieri Regiment; it is also known as the “Dolina dei 500” because of the large number of fallen soldiers buried here during the conflict. Many wartime remains can still be seen along the route, including communication trenches, inscriptions, an artificial gallery, and the ruins of a building once used as a first-aid station. After climbing out of the dolina, a few hundred metres further on it is possible to reach the fortified line of Monte Sei Busi, part of the so-called Italian Trench Line, which stretched from Monte San Michele to Monfalcone. Walking parallel to the defensive line, which can be entered at certain points, visitors can observe machine-gun positions, rifle loopholes, tunnels dug for storing ammunition or creating shelters, and various writings left by soldiers during their stay.
