Mount San Michele was fiercely contested between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was the scene of harsh fighting, especially during the first year of the war. The area, which also includes San Martino del Carso, was crucial for holding the Isonzo Front and the city of Gorizia, and for this reason it was stubbornly defended by Hungarian troops. It also became particularly famous thanks to the poems that Giuseppe Ungaretti wrote there. The Italian army succeeded in capturing it during the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo, in August 1916. In San Martino del Carso there is a memorial stone dedicated to the 4th Honvéd, a Hungarian infantry regiment that fought for a long time in this area. The route then continues along CAI trail 73 and, at the first junction, turns left onto CAI trail 76. After passing the remains of the Italian trench struck on 29 June 1916 during the phosgene gas attack, the open-air museum is reached in just over 10 minutes. The proposed itinerary leads to the discovery of Cima 3 and Cima 4, where numerous Austro-Hungarian and Italian military positions can be seen, including the Third Army gun gallery, near which visitors can enjoy an extraordinary panoramic view. Those wishing to extend the hike can also reach Cima 1 and Cima 2 by following the signs for the Percorso dei Cippi.
The ideal starting point is Piazza della Fontana in San Martino del Carso, where Ungaretti’s poem of the same name can be read. Following the signs for the cemetery, turn left into Via Vallone and then right into Via Bosco Cappuccio, reaching, on a gentle uphill stretch, the memorial stone of the 4th Honvéd. Returning towards the paved road, after a few metres on the left begins CAI trail 73, which marks the start of the very easy ascent to the Mount San Michele Open-Air Museum. At the first junction, it is necessary to turn left, following the signs for the Alpe Adria Trail, and in just over 10 minutes you will reach the open-air museum.
