Welcome to Gröbming!

The market town of Gröbming covers 6,695 hectares and borders the province of Upper Austria on its northern side. The market itself lies at an altitude of 776 m above sea level.

We know from history that the Romans were already in this area (Roman stone in the Catholic church, Sölkpass), later the region was settled by Slavs and Bavarians (700 - 1000). The first farms were documented in the 11th century (Eibenthaler, Schörkmayr, ...).

In 1994, Gröbming celebrated its 900th anniversary and the handover of the municipal coat of arms. The mighty late Gothic church was consecrated in 1500. The Gothic winged altar, usually referred to as the “Apostle Altar”, is particularly worth seeing. It is the largest of all surviving winged altars in Styria.

During the Reformation, Gröbming was a small refuge for Martin Luther's followers. The Protestant church was built in 1850 and is the oldest in Styria. The altarpiece, which depicts Christ the Risen Christ, was a gift from Emperor Wilhelm of Prussia.

Gröbming has long had uncertified market rights, which is why there was a market magistrate until 1848, who was replaced by the first mayor. Summer tourism in Gröbming - Stoderzinken began around the turn of the century with Baron Horstig. In 1902, Peter Rosegger visited Baron Horstig on the Stoderzinken; the Stoderkircherl was also built around this time.

The Gröbming cheese dairy was also founded in 1902 and still produces excellent cheeses from the best Alpine milk today. During the Second World War, the market was home to thousands of refugees. The South Tyrolean settlement still reminds us of this today.

At the beginning of the 1960s, the Stoderzinken was opened up for winter tourism with lifts. Over the last few decades, Gröbming has developed into an administrative, economic and educational town and the center of the Gröbming region.

In 1979, the market was given a major bypass. In order to relieve the town center of heavy traffic, the so-called northern bypass was built twelve years later. The renovation of the town began in 1988 and turned Gröbming into one of the most beautiful markets in our homeland.

Today, the market town of Gröbming is home to many small and medium-sized businesses. Events such as the legendary Ennstal Classic and the Mineral Market make Gröbming famous far beyond its borders.
