With countless hours of work for free they construced a model of the elevator system on a scale of 1:10 in the new designed local heritage museum in Steinbach.

The members of the historical society of Steinbach built a model of this elevator in several hours of hard work on a scale of 1: 10 inside the newly designed community centre in Steinbach at Lake Attersee.

The history of the elevator:
Emperor Rudolph II passed a general mandate in 1595 to build the salt-mine in Ebensee. While there was a shortage of wood on Hallstatt, this region was rich in wood.

One of the main means of transport for wood was by water in the streams and rivers, which could be used even more effectively thanks to the construction of logging dams.

It was indispensable to overcome the watershed to the drift waters flowing into the River Traun in order to transport wood from the Weißenbach valley to Ebensee.
The wood -elevator in the Weißenbach valley, which was at work for 150 years (1722-1871) was an exception.

From mid June until mid September, the wood-elevator can be visited at the community centre, every Wednesday from 5.30pm. Guided tours from 6pm (please book in advance) all-year-round.
