One of the most beautiful excursions on Salzburg's sun terrace introduces you to the history of mining.

Experience with us 4000 years of mining! From the prehistoric beginnings with stone mallets, wooden wedges and fire setting to ore mining with mallets and iron to the use of black powder. The beginning of mining probably dates back to the Neolithic Age. This makes the Sunnpau show mine one of the oldest mines in Salzburg.

We invite children and parents to discover an almost forgotten world with us. How was the valuable ore mined over 4000 years ago? Who were the bones and grave goods found in the mine? And why is copper no longer mined in St.Veit today?

The Sunnpau show mine is part of the UNESCO Ore of the Alps Geopark and offers insights into the development of mining from the Bronze Age to modern times. Unique in Central Europe is the wide penetration into the hard dolomite with fire settlement alone. Guided tours in German and English are offered during opening hours.

Notes:

  • Admission for children only from 4 years of age.
  • For the hearing impaired and non-German or non-English speakers, we offer a written version of the tour in German, English, Spanish, Catalan, Polish, Czech, Russian, Hungarian, Dutch and Italian.
  • For people with walking difficulties the tour of the tunnel is unfortunately not possible. However, our colleagues at the Seelacken Museum will be happy to tell you all about mining and the history of our town and guide you through the accessible parts of the museum. You can also drive directly to the museum by car.
  • Unfortunately, a visit to the mine is not suitable for the blind. However, if you are interested in mining and the history of the site, you can take part in a guided tour of the Seelacken Museum. Carrying a guide dog and cane and touching selected exhibits is allowed.
