Summer in Saalfelden Leogang
Hiking, Biking, Relaxing and a Lot of Culture
From relaxing strolls to rock climbing
Any region that describes itself as “Austria's most richly diverse” must of course be able to back up the claim. In Saalfelden Leogang, this can be seen in the region’s many hiking trails, which evidence these contrasts clearly.
In accordance with its slogan “just hike”, Saalfelden Leogang is a place where hikers will find inspiration to pause and reflect on the here and now. This is encouraged through inconspicuous, locally created installations such as 360-degree wooden benches and wrought-iron swings, to cite two examples, which offer visitors a chance to look at things from a different perspective than usual.
Continuing up into the heights, there are via ferratas and other climbing routes. The Steinberge region, beloved for its mountain sports, offers the Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge peaks as well as Steinplatte. These mountains are so popular that you may even run into a professional climber like Chris Sharma or even the Huber brothers, a famed duo of extreme mountaineers.
Mountain biking, road biking and e-biking: something for every cyclist
Biking has become a trend sport for the summer. With the new easy-to-ride mountain bikes and reasonably good physical fitness you can get almost anywhere these days. The vast network of trails in Saalfelden Leogang is well suited to mountain or trail bikes, and offers cyclists of all skill sets a wide range of tours at varying levels of difficulty.
In Bikepark Leogang, one of Europe’s most renowned facilities, beginners of all ages can visit the Riders Playground in order to learn how best to steer a mountain bike through trails, rocks and roots. Serious mountain bikers can up their skills on the freeride and downhill tracks and obstacles. The bikepark is so comprehensive and of such high quality that in 2020 it will host to the UCI Mountain Bike Downhill World Championships for the second time.
Road bikers will also find ideal terrain in Saalfelden Leogang. Well-conditioned cyclists will love the Kaisertour, which curves steeply all the way up Grossglockner, the highest mountain in Austria. The Steinberg Circuit (Steinbergrunde) is less demanding and affords panoramic views of the Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge peaks.
A family holiday in Saalfelden Leogang: from “close to nature” to “action-packed”
Saalfelden Leogang is ideal for families because it offers such a wide range of options.
Asitz is known as the Mountain of the Senses. Here, families have the opportunity of a close encounter with Mother Nature that engages all the senses: Feel the soft alpine pastures underfoot while walking along the Barefoot Trail; inhale the fragrance of the mountains, replete with wild herbs and alpine plants; sharpen your auditory sense by being very quiet and focusing only on the sounds you hear in the middle of the forest. Relaxing loungers, panoramic terraces and the “Stille Wasser am Asitz” swimming platform in the Speichersee bathing lake offer ample opportunities to relax and enjoy nature – visually, as well.
Two options for teeing off at panoramic 18-hole golf courses
To cap off its richly diverse recreational offering, Saalfelden Leogang offers two golf courses: Urslautal and Brandlhof, both of which are 18-hole courses. Both courses likewise feature natural obstacles and dreamlike views of the surrounding mountains. Not far from the golf courses, there are several hotels that cater especially to golfers: the Hotel Gut Brandlhof, the Krallerhof, the Ritzenhof and the Puradies.
Music, art and culture – International Jazzfestival, outdoor concerts and the ALM:KULTUR event
Above and beyond its outdoor activities, Saalfelden Leogang is well known for its many cultural events. Best known is the International Jazzfestival Saalfelden, which takes place every year at the end of August. Once again in 2018, well-known stars and newcomers to the scene alike will appear for the 39th time, turning Saalfelden something akin to a huge jazz club.
The Tonspuren am Asitz festival comprises five outdoor concerts given between June and August on Asitz, affectionally known as the Mountain of the Senses.
The ALM:KULTUR event takes place between July and September, and offers cultural events set against an unusual backdrop. Way up high at the rustic alpine lodges, various musicians and artists give weekly concerts and special workshops, in keeping with the theme Tradition Meets Modernity.
