Highly-Diverse Winter Adventures in Saalfelden Leogang
Each day of your holiday an unforgettable and varied experience
Snow Park or sledding track, spa hotel or family apartment, Nordic Park or the Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn Skicircus: the Saalfelden Leogang holiday region is filled with these charming contrasts. “We call ourselves the most diversified holiday region in Austria. This reputation must of course be earned, which is why we have assembled our winter offerings in as many directions as possible. In this way, we hope to satisfy the differing interests of our guests,“ emphasizes Marco Pointner, Managing Director of the Saalfelden Leogang Tourism Bureau.
The Coolest Ski Area of the Alps
With the Asitzbahn and the Steinbergbahn, Saalfelden Leogang is part of the largest ski area in Austria. The Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbunn Skicircus includes 270 perfectly-prepared kilometers of trails for winter sports fans of every ability level: 140 km of blue trails for beginners, 112 km red trails for advanced skiers and 18 km black trails for experts. With 70 lifts, more than 60 ski huts, seven snow parks, two free-ride parks, two flood-lit slopes and three sledding runs, every day is an unforgettable experience in the region. SkiMovie-, Speed- and Racing trails, Fun-Cross, snow trails and snow tubing provide plenty of action-packed diversion.
Cross-country Skiing, Winter Hiking or Ice Skating in the Nordic Park
Winter sports doesn’t always mean skiing: Saalfelden Leogang is internationally known as the Nordic Centre of excellence. Nordic sports such as cross-country skiing, winter hiking or ice skating are also gaining in popularity. The Saalfelden Leogang area seeks out these trends, and guests as well as locals find a concentrated bundle of off-piste activities in the Nordic Park at Lake Ritzensee. Cross-country fans glide through the glistening snow-covered landscapes of the Saalfelden Leogang region on a trail network of approximately 150 kilometers, with different levels of difficulty. Cross-country skiing and biathlon legends Felix Gottwald and Simon Eder come from the area and regularly use the trails around Saalfelden Leogang for training purposes. And even the youngest athletes learn the basics of cross-country skiing in the popular Fun & Snow Park, and ice skaters use the picturesque Lake Ritzensee in Saalfelden with the mountain range known as the Steinernes Meer as a backdrop for their pirouettes.
Winter Program Off the Beaten Path
If you want to climb the mountain yourself in order to find the very best and uncrowded trails, you would do well to book a ski-tour with our local mountain guides and ski instructors, or join the weekly evening Ski-Tour on the Asitz. The weekly Winter Experience Program includes not only guided snowshoe hikes and cross-country training for beginners, but many other activities for winter sport fans looking for something new. A very popular example is the snowshoe hikes on “bear paws,“ which is a unique experience, mostly due to the magnificent landscape and unforgettable parnoramas of the Saalfelden Leogang region. Happiness reigns also at the sleigh ride: “Leo‘s Kufengaudi“ takes place at the Asitz, which you can easily reach with the gondola— Tuesdays and Fridays also at night. Another possibility is the six km-long natural sledding run at Biberg in Saalfelden, where a shuttle service greatly reduces the two-hour ascent. A particular highlight is a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snow-covered valleys—not much horsepower, but plenty of winter romance! “High rollers“ love the Asitz, because it’s the location of one of the longest and fastest ziplines in the world. The Flying Fox XXL gives adrenaline junkies a boost, with its 130 km/h downhill ride on a 1.6 km-long zipline (open from early March).
