The Roman city of Carnuntum is your gateway to antiquity. Here you will experience completely reconstructed buildings from the time of the Roman Empire.

Roman City Carnuntum

In Carnuntum, the Roman era is not a distant past shimmering through sparse remains of walls, but a present that can be experienced with all senses. Where 1700 years ago Roman emperors like Marcus Aurelius wrote world history, today you can experience antiquity close enough to touch. In the reconstructed Roman Quarter, fully functional Roman houses entice visitors, the amphitheaters transport visitors into the world of gladiators, and in the Carnuntinum Museum, timeless treasures bear witness to the culture and joie de vivre of the former inhabitants. A huge open-air area with large meadows, idyllic squares in the shade of decades-old trees and a large playground complete the experience.

**Unique Roman experience at the gates of Vienna**.
Carnuntum is also known worldwide for the partly groundbreaking finds that allow us to better understand the world of the Romans. The highlights can be found in the Museum Carnuntinum, Carnuntum's treasure house. Currently, the Museum Carnuntinum is home to the exhibition "Weltstadt am Donaulimes", dedicated to Carnuntum's eventful history.

UNESCO World Heritage Site at the gates of Vienna

The Danube Limes (the fortifications along the Danube in Bavaria, Austria and Slovakia) forms, after Hadrian's and Antoninus' Wall in Great Britain and the "Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes" in Germany, the third section of the large-scale UNESCO project "Frontiers of the Roman Empire". As part of the Austrian Danube Limes, Carnuntum was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.
