The first inhabitants conquered by the wonderous valley

From ancient times, the Ansiei Valley (Valle d'Ansiei) and its surrounding hills were inhabited by pre-Roman populations of Indo-European origins. Signs of life in Roman times were confirmed by the discovery of funerary pottery recovered in the vicinities of Mt. Agudo and Mt. Calvary (Monte Agudo and Monte Calvario) from the first and second centuries A.D.

Of significance are traces of the old Roman road that passes from Lozzo di Cadore to Auronzo di Cadore revealing a branch of the great road from the imperial time of Claudius Augustus (Claudia Augusta), that crossed the Dolomites on its way to the Danube.

The proto-Roman peoples chose this valley for its obvious beauty and for the rich mineral deposits that the mountains reveal in their lap: silver, iron, copper and more especially, lead.

For more information, we recommend a visit to the multi-themed Museum of the Palazzo Corte Metto where you may take a journey of discovery of the rich archeological, mining and natural history of the region.
