The Sixenhof was first mentioned in records in 1361. The entailed estate as it is today was built in 1810 after an arson attack.
However, most of the inventory and equipment date back to the turn of the century (1800/1900).
In 1984, the Association of Friends of the ACHENTAL MUSEUM was founded. Restoration of the Sixenhof, which has been owned by the municipality of Achenkirch since 1964, began immediately. In 1987 the opening of the museum of local history was celebrated, however the association does not consider its work done.
The Achental valley has always been rich in forest and wildlife. For centuries, the lake with its surrounding mountains has attracted guests for hunting and fishing, making the Achental one of the most traditional summer resorts in Tirol. For more than a hundred years, the ships and steam cog railway have been operating during the summer months for guests from all over the world.
The Sixenhof takes visitors on a journey into the past, showing how our ancestors used to live and work. Wood was the most important raw material. The farming family at the "SIXN" or "OBERLEND" farm on the northern shore of Lake Achensee managed the farm with approx. 25 head of cattle, some horses, pigs, sheep, chicken, 11 hectares of field, 54 hectares of forest, their own mountain pasture (Kögl), alpine meadows and grazing rights.
This livelihood provided sufficient support for the family of five to ten. When farmers from the Tegernsee area began settling in the Achental, the Bavarian single farmhouse (living space, stable and barn under the same roof) became the predominant building style. The lower part of the building which housed the living quarters and space for the animals was built of brick and the upper floors were built in wood.
21 rooms at the Sixenhof museum showcase typical agricultural and tradesmen's tools, a blacksmith and shoemakers workshop and a weaving mill. Numerous exhibits depict the significance of hunting, fishing and the timber industry in this area, the life of Dominikus Aschbacher (freedom fighter in 1809) and the Achensee shipping company. In addition, a valley cross section explains interesting facts about the geology of the region.
